Companies Urged to Put the Brakes on Road Deaths

Research by a driving charity suggests that as many as one-in-six road deaths could be caused by drivers under the influence of drugs, whilst a similar number are caused by drivers under the influence of drink.

The charity, Brake, aims to reduce the number of road deaths caused by drivers being under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Now, the charity is urging companies to introduce stringent policies, to try and reduce the statistics.

Midlands-based fleet management company, Fleet Evolution, is supporting Brake’s recommendation. The fleet specialists found that a third of company car drivers admit to driving early in the morning, after drinking to excess the night before.

Fleet Evolution recommends a zero-tolerance approach

This can be enforced by stringent policies and raising awareness on the risks posed by driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

For a limited time, Fleet Evolution is offering businesses, a free, ready-to-implement policy, regarding employees’ driving responsibilities while on company business, in a bid to cut down on the number of road deaths caused by drink and drugs.

Andrew Leech, Managing Director of Fleet Evolution, said: “Most drivers respond to education and just need the risks pointing out. Myths prevail over driving the morning after, and your capacity to drive after reaching the alcohol limit, while drug use is still largely uncovered in policies on driving.”

“We hope that by making policies available at no cost, we can possibly help ensure fewer families and colleagues are affected by road traffic accidents, especially in these areas where it is so preventable.”
