The Post-Lockdown Employee Mobility Conundrum

As lockdown continues to ease into the new ‘normal’, many are starting to forget what the old normal was. In regard to post-lockdown, employee motoring has decreased. One in three of us are working from home now. At Fleet Evolution, we are staggering our shift patterns. Many of our team come to the office just one or two days a week, whilst others remain working remotely. Public transport is largely desolate, and roads are still relatively empty, except for the surge of cyclists that is! Meetings are increasingly virtual, and transport is increasingly physical, whether by pedal or foot! So how will employee mobility change after this strange time we’re living in?

Employee Mobility has Always been Important

Though, this importance is apparently lessening, with more of us working from home and holding meetings remotely. You would be forgiven for thinking that mobility was something the employee could plan unassisted. However, companies that help their team unlock the mobility conundrum can really win both financially and with recruitment/retention!

For years we’ve been putting together mobility planning strategies and decision trees for journey planning; shouting about the virtues of video conferencing, reducing employees travel times and environmental impact. Now, COVID has forced many to embrace these technologies. It’s not a solution for all meetings though, for some instances site visits will still be required. Whether that’s to your office or the customer site for a meeting, maintenance task or delivery.

How Can you Help your Employees make Informed Decisions?

At the moment, we’re seeing a surge in old car sales and a decline in public transport. There are plenty of reasons to offer alternatives! Firstly, you need to get the strategy right. As most people are now, we encourage web conferencing via Zoom (or similar) for simpler meetings.

For more detailed meetings, face to face is still best. Obviously, you’ll need to have face masks and hand sanitiser, and a nice 6ft gap between you as well. You could even have your meeting outside, enjoy the hot weather while it lasts!

For journeys under 10 miles, it makes sense to cycle or simply hop in a taxi or uber. If you’re travelling up to 100 miles, let the train take the strain! Trains are clean and pretty empty at the mo., so clearly a worthy contender. If you’re not interested in public transport or indeed exercise, there is one last option…

Use an Electric Car!

When travelling over 100 miles, electric cars really stack up! If the employee doesn’t have their own car, hire cars can be booked through us! Don’t worry, all COVID clean and complying with health and safety guidance.

For your employees’ general mobility, electric cars and bikes are hugely popular at the moment. Both are fantastic via salary sacrifice for employee and employer! Enjoy huge financial benefits when salary sacrifice is used. Adding these to your benefits portfolio will show your love of both your employees and the planet! Unlock the mobility puzzle for your employees and you’ll reap significant rewards! Both immediate financial rewards and productivity rewards! You’ll also go one step further, helping to protect the cleaner air we’re all starting to enjoy!
