EV Tips: Giving your Electric Car some TLC over Lockdown

Lockdown for many of us has been a reflective time to take care of one’s self and others closet to us during this tumultuous period. Whether you are pampering with facemasks three times a week or doing cardio workouts in your kitchen, it has been more critical than ever to look after yourself. The same applies to your electric vehicles (EV’s). They need some TLC too; whether you are regularly driving as a key worker, or leaving your EV parked for weeks untouched, outside your home. Here are some useful EV tips you can use to keep your car healthy over lockdown:

Don’t let your EV run low on battery

Keep your EV topped up! You can leave it plugged in as it will only use electricity when it’s hungry. Don’t worry, it won’t increase your electricity bill and will fend for itself nicely. Take a look at our blog here detailing some of the advancements in the charging times of EV batteries.

Setting your charge limit between UNDER 100%

Doing this will allow your car to cycle through which parts of the battery to fill and which ones to leave empty. Batteries don’t like to be kept on full charge constantly. If the car is left still for a long time, the battery acid will degrade against the positive battery end when the cell is at high voltage. Keeping under 100% charge limit would prevent this from occurring.

Try to take your EV for a 30-minute spin each week.

We recommend this because your car has two batteries; the large one that drives the car and a smaller 12v battery too. Taking it for a spin routinely will ensure the battery is kept topped up. Furthermore, EV tyres are usually heavier than tyres from other cars. So, if left stationary for too long, they can get flat spots, causing driving vibrations.

While on your 30-minute drive each week, get the air-conditioning system running to prevent moisture from building up and the AC system from smelling. When you’re not driving, you can turn it on and off from your EV app on your phone, simple stuff! Get the AC running even if you don’t have an EV, it will make a world of difference!

Keep your EV looking spick and span!

Give it regular baths, even if you’re not flaunting it around the town. Bird droppings aren’t just a grim sight; they actually can damage your paintwork. Use a soft cloth to wash it down, no plastic-based sponge! Use a proper car shampoo too. Also, make sure to hoover your EV out too. You don’t want a dusty car to drive in when the lockdown is eventually lifted.

Purchase a windscreen sun visor to prevent the interior of your EV from becoming tarnished!
