How to Go Electric with No Home Charging: Join the Electric Revolution

As you may already know, we have a bold claim at Fleet Evolution. We strongly believe that if you have a drive or garage, you have all the infrastructure you need to move to electric! Although that accounts for over half of you, we want the rest of you to feel the love too! So, how can you move to electric with no home charging?

Over 40% of UK drivers don’t have a drive or garage. Without this, they can’t fast charge at home. Is this a reason to carry on wasting money on dirty diesel cars? We say “hell no!”, but guess who has some innovative ways for you to make the move to electric without compromise? Yes, that’s right, it’s us.

The average UK driver covers 200 miles in a week. The average electric car covers 200 miles on a single charge. Interesting. But before you consider giving the local kids a free skipping rope by straddling the kerb with an extension lead, let’s look at some more realistic options. Ones that won’t injure your local pedestrians or cause you to fall foul of health and safety.

First, Don’t Assume That You Have No Charging Nearby.

Check out some apps that are available for this exact purpose, like Zap-Map! You’ll be pleasantly surprised by what you may find! Did you know that most of us are under a mile from the nearest public charge point? And with charge points typically only utilised 3% of the time, you’ll likely find one free! Just be aware, most aren’t fast chargers. Many are free, but you may have to leave your car all night to get 200 miles. In some areas, you may get a literal charge to charge!

Look at Zap-Map, though. It may well be that making a small change in where you shop, eat, watch films, or work out could solve your charging needs! It’s often free too! For example, I now take my kids to the picture house at Resorts World by the NEC. A 3-hour stop there will give me 180 miles of range in my I-PACE, completely free! Or at least for the normal parking charge of £1.50 for cinema-goers.

Secondly, Consider Charge Speeds.

There are a few different kinds of chargers available, the fastest chargers can give 200 miles in under an hour! These fast chargers can be expensive, but you may have one within your regular journeys. As an example, I recently moved to a new gym. Partially so my kids could go swimming in the week, but also because my new gym has car charging, 50kwh, pretty quick! A 90-minute gym stop gives me 180 miles at Bannatyne’s, for just £10! More expensive than Resorts World, but a lot cheaper than petrol/diesel.

Do You Need a Bit More Convenience With No Home Charging?

The government are putting in kerbside charging in many areas, pretty nifty and convenient. Although, if you really want convenience, how about charging at work? And what’s the simplest way to get this? Well, first, your employer puts in our salary sacrifice car scheme, which costs them nothing! Then, 4 of your colleagues join you in taking on electric cars. After that, we’ll give your employer a charge point to install at your workplace, absolutely free! So, charge while you work and get a week’s worth of charge in 3 hours or so! Either free or at corporate electricity rates, which is generally £5 or less. Ooh, and don’t forget about electric flex for family holidays or those weekend trips away!

Electric cars are for everyone, you can drive even if you don’t have a drive! It can be much more convenient than weekly trips to the petrol station for £30 worth of diesel!
