How Many People Are Going Electric?

How many people are going electric? Much like Bob Dylan at Newport Folk Festival, around 1 in 4 houses may “go electric” with their car purchases! This comes in anticipation of the 2030 government ban on diesel and petrol cars.

According to energy watchdog Ofgem, more than 6.5 million households plan to buy an electric or hybrid vehicle during the current decade, equating to around 18 million battery and plug-in vehicles on UK roads. The development of Giga factories (capable of producing batteries and EVs at scale) will be vitally important when meeting the growing demand for the reduction of fossil fuel-powered vehicles.

New Homes Built with EV Charge Points

There are a growing number of EVs sitting on driveways and business parks of the UK. This dramatic consumer shift will naturally need to be met with the right charging infrastructure. This will ensure that EVs can maintain the distances needed for both short and long commutes. The UK government has proposed to install EV charging points in all new-build homes with a dedicated parking space, seeing building regulations being adapted to make charging EVs both time and cost-effective.

How Long Will Home Charging Units be Able to Power my Car for?

Government proposals have said that all home charging points installed show have a power rating output of at least 7kw, as well as being adaptable enough to work with a wide range of electric vehicle brands. This would mean that for every hour of charge overnight, you would add around 30 miles to your EV battery, so would likely only need a few hours of charge per evening to get you where you need to be the next day.

These numbers vary depending on the type of electric vehicle you have but using the Nissan Leaf (2018) as a benchmark, you could expect to charge the 40kwh battery for a total of 143 miles of range within 6 hours on a 7kw charge point, rising to just 1 hour with a 43-50kw rapid charging unit.

How Would I Charge my Car if I Own an Older Home?

Hopefully, there will be more government grants to help all older homes become equipped with convenient charge points so charging your car is as simple as charging your mobile phone!
