Back to School: Living with an Electric Car

Welcome to the next lesson in our back to school sessions on electric cars. So far, we’ve looked at how electric cars work and how to charge your electric car. Now, let’s look at the basics of living with an electric car.

We all know that living with an electric car is a fraught journey. Sucking the life out of motoring with no engine noise and constant range anxiety, right? Well, the reality is somewhat more chilled and much more rewarding! Time to get some learning in.

Traditional Cars Run on Fossil Fuels

This means that every time you drive, you put dangerous chemicals into the atmosphere. It also means you’re taking weekly trips to a local petrol station to refuel. However, in fairness, it does mean you can refuel in a few minutes. Its technology you understand, which gives huge reassurance. Though, a couple of decades ago, we used to go to the high street to loan videos or DVDs. I don’t think any of us want to go back to those days!

Forget Everything You Know About Electric Cars

They are a piece of modern technology, with more in common with the 21st century. Like all technology, they are controlled via an app. This app gives you a whole myriad of convenience at your fingertips. When you wake up with an electric car, you can wake your car up. It’ll be ready when you are, defrosted and warmed. You can also charge it remotely; you just need to remember to plug it in when you get home! For the fun folk, there are even cars that can be programmed to do a celebration dance or bottom burp when people sit on seats.

This one is a no brainer, charging is easy. Just plug it in when you get home and let the app do the rest! Again, without the hassle of driving to a petrol station, waiting for people to finish, then find their seatbelt…

In an electric, you just plug-in and get on with your life! Many cars are good for 200 miles+. When you need to cover more range, well let’s revisit our lesson on charging.

Inside the Cab, an Electric Car Looks Like a Normal Car

That’s where the similarity ends. An electric car will completely adapt to your mood. If you want to indulge your inner racer tendencies, EVs will beat pretty much anything off the lights! If you want to chill, they’ll chill with you. After all, a diesel engine roaring all over your tunes is worse than playing an old piece of scratched vinyl!

Many electrics are also 4-wheel drive! So, while you’re not contributing as much to global warming, you don’t need to fear the cold spells!

Like Most Tech, Your Location Can Make EVs Slightly Out of Reach

I am writing this from my home overlooking cow fields and woods, with 2mb internet… I can’t even stream an HD film!

If you have no drive or garage, you may not quite be ready for the move. Well, unless you have reliable charging nearby or at work. An ICE vehicle is like getting up from your sofa, walking to a deep tv and pushing a button to select from one of the 4 channels you have to choose from… then holding the aerial in a certain corner to get rid of the snow on the screen…
