Maintenance Costs Of Electric Vehicles

Buying an electric vehicle (EV) is generally more expensive to purchase than a “traditional” car with an internal combustion engine. However, EVs require a lot less maintenance and in doing so, cost less. It’s important to know that the general maintenance costs for EVs will depend on its make and model. This article will consider the average EV to demonstrate the maintenance costs of electric vehicles.

The drive trains for EVs do not require as much maintenance than non-electric cars. This is because the more moving parts a car has, the more difficult it is to maintain. EVs have a much lower amount of parts than an internal combustion engine. There is also not any metal wear on electric vehicles like a clutch system.

Battery and Repair/Replacement Elements

In fairness, manufactures of EVs offer good warranties on EV batteries. The deviation of EV batteries has been a concern for electric cars in that replacing batteries will be expensive. However, this worry has been combatted by the expectancy of manufacturers’ batteries to last longer than the rest of the EV itself.

Although rare, if you discover that there is a depreciation in the battery range, this could be due to the battery pack having some undue decay. If so, you need to contact the manufacturer of your EV to service the battery. The repair process includes replacing sub-optimal cells as opposed to the entire battery pack itself. This is very rare and is more convenient and cost-effective. Costs can still range, so it is worth seeing how much it will cost for your manufacturer to complete. You should also check if you are still in the EV warranty.

Tip to save your car battery health: leave your car charged between 80% and 90%. Top it up as quickly as possible when you’re getting low on charge.

Wear on your Tyres

Electric cars are usually heavier than conventionally fuelled vehicles. This leads to EVs getting more accelerated tyre wear, so these should be checked often. Change tyres if they have worn down. Maintenance costs for EV can be higher because of this. Take a look at our blog on how to drive more efficiently to reduce the strain on your tyres.

Brakes can sometimes outlast the life of an EV because they have conventional disc brakes that are mainly used as an emergency to the regenerative braking. Therefore, brake wear will be hugely reduced. You’ll be saving so many pennies along the way!

Finally, windscreens, wipers and washer fluid acts the same as a non-electric vehicle. Windscreens are still liable to crack. Therefore all this still needs to be replaced, like any other petrol/diesel-fulled car.
