MG ZS EV x Jordan: What Happens When you Combine the Two?

OK, so just to be open and upfront, I hate clickbait headlines. Although, I could definitely be accused of doing it. Still, if you’re here looking for some new motoring force in Formula One, you’re in the wrong place! The MG we’re referring to is indeed MG Motor Company. Now a new company but using the nearly 100-year-old brand (est. 1923)! The “Jordan” isn’t a F1 team, but our very own EV scheme specialist, who’s nowhere near 100! She prefers things with 4 legs (and a mane) than 4 wheels, she does have a fondness for Audi’s though! This story tells the tale of when Jordan met the MG ZS EV.

So, What Brought this odd Coupling Together?

Well, MG may be nearly 100, but they are not above a bit of reinvention! Since the brand relaunched, you’re more likely to see mid-range SUV’s bearing their badges than small 2-seater soft tops. That’s not all though… My first memory of MG was my youth, taking the engine from a 2.0L MG Montego and placing it in a mini; great fun, until it wasn’t. MG engines were loud, brash and bolshie! Imagine our surprise that MG has entered the electric revolution!

Late 2019, MG quietly launched the ZS electric, a mid-size SUV settling in around similar sizes as the Juke and Qashqai. Covering a claimed 160 miles on a single charge, all for less than £25,000! Amazing right? Wrong! You can get it below £300 a month all in on our scheme, no deposit no hassle! This month, Jordan got her hands on it for an extended drive. Taking it up and down motorways and lanes and to a few customers to boot!

So, What Did she Think of the MG ZS EV?

Her first impressions of the MG ZS EV are incredibly positive. It looks stylish and very ‘now’ in a time when SUV’s are dominating. It’s a mid-size SUV, perfect for a family of 4, tight for a family of 5. If you hate EV’s that look quirky and obviously electric, you’re in luck! It looks like a normal, boring, traditional car in every way! It’s probably around the size of the Renault Captur and the cabin looks relatively modern. It reassured her with 160 miles range when she turned the car on, albeit after a load of pings and screens. If you were a getaway driver waiting to check how much range you had before fleeing, you’d be caught red-handed!

She reports that on a drive the car is well put together, it feels solid and the trim is good. The ride is slightly hard and there’s a little more road noise than you would get from an e-Golf, but it’s a good car. Lots of spec, including Apple CarPlay, but the built-in satnav is poor and dated. It can’t even plan in charge stops, so you’d need to use ZapMap for that!

Range wise the car covers 120 miles, not 160. As well, the last half of the range seems to go down very quickly. So, be aware when planning your route and charge stops. However, it gains 100 miles in 45 minutes at the services or 6 hours at a free car park charge point or your drive.

So, Who Would the MG ZS EV Suit?

Well, if you want to do the school run without killing the kids, this is perfect. It won’t get NEAR 160 miles unless you’re in the city all the time. Though if you rarely do over 100 miles and want a stylish SUV, the MG ZS EV is A-Okay in our book! Would Jordan have one? Well it could work but as she regularly does 200-mile trips a couple of times a week, she’d prefer the Tesla model 3, Leaf or ENiro  (much better range and lower CO2 than her four-legged friends!). For 95% of you reading this, if you have a drive or garage this could be the perfect car for you! For less than the cost of keeping a 4-year-old Captur or Juke on the road!
