Are There Any Off-Road Electric Vehicles?

According to a report by The Guardian, the UK could ban the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles as early as 2030. With this swift move to electric vehicles, these vehicles need to be universal as well as capable of on and off-road travel at least by the time we hit 2030.

So, where are we in relation to off-road electric vehicles? Will enough of them converted to electric before the 2030 goal? What types of off-road vehicles are already electric?

Off-road vehicles are characterised as any type of a vehicle that has the ability to drive on and off paved roads. They tend to have larger tyres than normal vehicles, as well as open and deep tread. The strong suspension also tends to be a factor in an off-road car.

Here is a list of a few 2020 UK cars that are four-wheel/off-road, and electric in case you were thinking of purchasing one!

Audi E-Tron

This is a popular four-wheel-drive system. It is strong and is capable to drive across slippery fields and roads. Its power comes with a 95kWh battery giving around 248 miles.  It can also tow a respectable 1,800kg across slippery surfaces – a great asset to a streamlined and attractive-looking EV.

BMW iX3

This EV off-roader can promise a range of nearly 250 miles on one charge. The power will go to each of the four wheels in two electric motors. This is a good EV for driving off-road as well as being used for towing.

Bollinger B1 & B2

This is designed to be durable with a minimalist look. It has a towing capability of 3,400kg. It can drive up to 200 miles on a single charge and has a low-range, two-speed, gearbox. Furthermore, it has a huge 15 inches of ground clearance, perfect for off-road driving anywhere and everywhere.

Tesla Model X

This lacks ground clearance unlike the Bollinger, but is stylish, can survive off-road and can do a massive 314 miles between every charge. The four-wheel-drive is permanent so there will be no worries of losing control off-road.

Volvo XC40 Recharge

This was Volvo’s first electric car and was based on their smallest SUV. It has great capabilities with a four-wheel drive from two electric motors. It can tow up to 1,500kg of weight. It is also fast with a 0-62mph time in 4.9 seconds. Furthermore, it can drive a good 248 miles in a single charge and only takes 40 minutes to charge from 0% to 80%.
