Reasons to be Cheerful: Coronavirus, Air Pollution and More…

As we enter lockdown it’s a tough time to remain positive. Coronavirus wasn’t on people’s lips last year, it was a far off issue last month and came home to roost last night! As many of us are confined home, with no end in sight and money and health worries, it’s important we remain positive. So, we’ve highlighted a few reasons to be cheerful, remain upbeat and stay mentally strong during these challenging times.

The Lockdown is Having some Positive Effects

In Wuhan, people can see the sun and stars again! In China, air pollution is already 10 – 30% lower compared to last year! However, the ongoing elephant in the room, air pollution, does kill between 4-7 million people a year. If you cut to Milan, Italy the fall is closer to 40%! In terms of greenhouse gasses globally, levels are down almost 50% on last year! So hopefully, the decline in poor air will take fewer lives this year to last!

If you inhabit this wonderful planet but don’t have 2 legs, you know already that the world will survive and strive without us 2 legs. Look at Chernobyl 50 years on, no matter what stupid things we do, the planet can recover if we stop, through choice or lack of choice. Unfortunately, too frequently it’s the latter. We have already caused huge damage, but luckily, Coronavirus doesn’t seem to affect wildlife. So, there are also some short-term positives for our fellow inhabitants of this lovely planet!

In China, the long-held practice of eating wild animals has at last been banned! This won’t be the end, as humans, despite seeing ourselves as superior to nature, are stubborn. In some cases, we’re even stupid. Though, at the end of the day, this trend will be widely eliminated!

The quiet is encouraging new tourists to our cities, so there’s a lot of fake news around this. There are no dolphins in Venice canals, but in Nara, Japan, sika deer are exploring quiet streets. In a deserted school in California, wild turkeys have taken up residence, and Panama’s beautiful beaches are attracting wildlife, including Raccoons.

There are Reasons to be Cheerful!

There is a certain irony that, as we impose lockdown in the UK, many of us actually know who our neighbours and local vulnerable are. We probably know them much better then we have ever done before! We’ve started to care about others, to protect each other and to give without hope of reward. Yes, there are some idiots, but are you surprised? Many of us are helping local vulnerable people to get through this though, whether that’s helping the vulnerable get their necessities, children sending uplifting artwork to local elderly care homes, or simply walking vulnerable people’s dogs. Local pubs are offering over 75’s 2 free and delivered meals a week, teachers are taking free school meals to children, and taxi drivers are giving NHS workers free lifts, with locals donating towards his fuel costs! Also, families are coming together once again. Breaking out the playing cards or Monopoly, and even bringing family time around the lounge tv back from the dead!

We don’t know how long we’re going to be in this situation, or what shape we will be in at the other end, but the planet as a whole will be in better shape. As our home, that’s pretty important. To help do our bit, we’re taking our education on the benefits of electric cars online via webinars. If you need a distraction or want to continue reducing air pollution, join us here!
