Meet Mr Everyone. Mr Everyone has a 5-year-old Golf GTD he brought last year, in which he does 200 miles a week with his wife and 2 kids. He knows he could never afford an electric car, not unless he sells a child (in all fairness he does have a spare) but is that the reality?
Mr Everyone’s (used) car cost him £15,000 (costs from Autotrader), in 5 years he’ll sell it for £5,400 (costs from Autotrader). That’s £9,600 lost in value, or £160 a month! On top of this, per month he’ll pay £10 tax, £10 recovery, £45 maintenance and tyres and £55 insurance. That’s £280 a month for the family motoring, assuming nothing ‘big’ goes wrong with the car.
Now here’s the strange part…
Mr Everyone counts every penny of his electricity and phone bills, but is completely unaware of this, why? Well, it could be one of two things. He has either purchased his car and forgot about the outlay or has it on hire purchase and forgets that his car loses value every month (probably quicker than he pays off the balance). It’s just the way it’s always been.
