Now that electric vehicles are becoming more popular, you may have considered installing a charging point in your home. Having a charge point at home can help you beat the queues at charging stations! It can also give you peace of mind that you’ll always have a fully charged car when you need it. So, if you’re asking, “should I get a home charge point?” keep reading! We’ll go through some of the pros and cons of installing a charge point at home or your workplace.

Pro: Convenience

With a charging point of your own, you can simply charge your car overnight, ensuring you have a full tank for the next day. You can also plug your vehicle in and go about other tasks, rather than having to stay inside the car as you would at a public charging point; this makes owning your charging point the most convenient method of charging your electric vehicle.

Con: You may not have the space at home

Your EV charging point needs to be in a position that’s near your parked car and connected to the mains supply. Most people choose to install their charging point on an exterior wall or inside their garage, but if you live in an apartment or terraced house, you may find you don’t have the space.

Pro: You may be eligible for the Government’s Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme

The Government scheme provides funding towards a home charge point. They contribute 75% of the cost of installing your home charger up to a value of £350; this comes alongside other cost-saving initiatives like our Salary Sacrifice Scheme, where you can swap a portion of your gross salary for a fully maintained car.

Con: There may still be a high initial cost

Although the Government scheme may cover some of the costs involved with installing your charging point, it won’t cover the total cost. The average charging point costs £800, according to the RAC. Even with the Government funding, you may still have to fork up £450. It can be a high initial cost. However, if you order with Fleet Evolution, you can qualify for our plug-in promise where we’ll install a charge point at your workplace if 5 cars are taken through our scheme!

Pro AND Con: There’s already a growing network of charging points across the country

There are now more than 42,000 charging points in 15,500 locations across the UK. More public charge points make it less imperative to install a home charge point. Many charging points allow you to charge your car for free, so there are no additional costs that you have to pick up. If you’d like to discuss electric vehicles, or charging points, in more detail.
