Don’t Panic – Tips to Surviving and Prospering in a Climate Change Emergency!

The UK Parliament has just become the first in the world to declare an “environmental and climate change emergency” but as it was announced, parliament continued to be heated by carbon fuels, planes continued to fly and diesel cars hurtled over Westminster Bridge so what does this actually mean and what can you do? We’ll share some simple tips on reducing emissions for your company and employees!

So first why a climate emergency? Well, I am by no means qualified to offer expert views on global warming but leaving the weight of professional opinion behind that aside, there is no debate that fossil fuels are running out and that poor air quality kills thousands every year. I myself used to live in a city centre and was asthmatic, but since moving to the countryside 15 years ago I’ve never taken medication other than when I stray into London for the day!

A climate emergency can be very powerful, but only if paired with a radical action plan, we are yet to see what action plan if any may be issued centrally but we’re going to provide our action plan for your business and workforce!

1. Reduce the footprint of your journeys

The best way to lower the emissions created on a business journey is not to make it in the first place. From working from home to video conferencing, there are many ways to reduce your carbon impact and company expenses and increase productivity at the same time. When you do have to travel consider the bike or train first, if it has to be a car then go electric, it’s not as expensive as you might think and the average electric car covers over 200 miles between charges now.

2. Move to Electric…

For pretty much everything. Over 20% of our electricity is currently generated from renewables and this figure increases every year! Whether it’s moving from gas heating or making the move from petrol or diesel cars. Heating can be partially replaced by ultra-efficient ground source heat pumps. Cars can be electrified for both essential company travel and even employees own cars via our salary sacrifice scheme. There is still a role for diesel and we can swap employees into RDE2 diesel vehicles for those longer journeys we sometimes need to make a few times a year.

3. Harness the sun!

Forget about feed-in tariffs, think about storage. Many companies and individuals pay as much as 15ppkw for electricity, but if you can generate your own electricity at 1 or 2 ppkw and store it until you need it, imagine the savings! Solar systems are plummeting in cost as are battery storage systems, or if you have electric cars you have a ready-made battery you can store electricity in to push back in later if you don’t need all of the range of an electric car.

There are many ways to make your business greener, your local council will normally have a programme, we are part of Coventry and Warwickshire’s amazing Green business programme which gives advice and grants to forward-thinking businesses. Just act today, less than 150 months until the point of no return…and then it WILL be time to panic!
