Tesla or Mercedes: Has Mercedes Met its Match?

There is no better comparison than the Model 3, Tesla’s best-selling vehicle, with the Mercedes-Benz A-Class car. That’s why we’ve compared all aspects of these two different breeds. The big question, Tesla or Mercedes? Has Mercedes finally met its match? Let’s find out.

Electric cars are gaining in popularity at a rapid pace. With their environmental credentials, many motorists believe it’s time to swap to an electric vehicle. The latest sales figures show a 184% year-on-year increase in the period September 2019-20, despite the motoring sector overall reporting poor sales figures due to the pandemic. It should come as no surprise though that electric is gaining steam; EVs now account for around 7% of market share. In fact, in terms of low carbon emissions, fuel efficiency, and noise pollution, EVs beat diesel cars every time. But environmental factors aside, does an electric sports car perform as well as a best-selling diesel model?

Vehicle Interiors

Both the Model 3 and a Mercedes A-Class have completely different interiors. Tesla has gone for a minimalistic interior design; they have a clutter-free dashboard and a touch-screen control system for a high-tech look. It is sleek and modern. Its modest, minimalist design has a Scandinavian feel.

Mercedes vehicles are known for their stylish interiors, and their A-Class model is no different. Every component feels plush and luxurious. In a world where trends have a less-is-more approach, we think the Model 3 interior comes out on top.

Performance

Both vehicles have four doors and four wheels. Aside from that, all components that determine how well the cars perform are completely different. The Tesla Model 3 is compact and pumps out 450HP and 472 lb-ft from its two motors, which produce maximum torque instantly. This will see the car reach speeds of up to 62mph in 3.4 seconds.

The internal components of the Mercedes are more complex. It sports a 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8 engine that creates 630 HP and 663 lb-ft of torque. This accelerates the car to speeds of 62mph in 3.2 seconds. However, the Model 3’s instant torque and lighter weight make this marginally slower acceleration relatively insignificant. Whereas a Mercedes A-Class may perform better in a drag race, if using the car for everyday use, there is no substantial difference between the two models.

Technology

The overall motoring experience for many drivers is heavily impacted not by the 0-60 mph speed but the vehicle’s technology. Mercedes are known for loading their cockpits with a wealth of motoring aids and perks. Top-of-the-line sound systems, programmable lighting, pan-European satellite navigation, parking sensors, cruise control, and digital radio, just to name a few that set the manufacturer apart.

As you’d expect from a brand whose sister company made history as the first commercial rocket to be sent to the International Space Station, Tesla is no slouch on the tech front either. Drivers can expect a fully loaded cockpit with 360° degree cameras and ultrasonic parking sensors, automatic parking, future-proofed fully automated self-driving capability and even the ability to summon the vehicle from its garage. The computer is a 15-inch touch screen and the driver’s smartphone you can use it as the car’s key.

Overall Verdict

So, which car comes out on top, the Tesla or the Mercedes? In terms of performance, the Mercedes is marginally better than the Model 3 with slightly more engine power and more rapid acceleration. However, the Tesla Model 3’s interior and environmental benefits, not to mention its advanced technology, make this car come out on top.

In fact, the Model 3 is outperforming the Class-A in terms of emission-based standards and contribution to pollution. It will be decades before diesel engines are gone altogether. Electric and hybrid vehicles are certainly the way of the future, and Tesla is the future of cars.
