Climate Change: Should the UK be Worried?

COVID-19 is starting to die down in the headlines, not that it’s no longer a massive threat, we just have the tools to manage it. The news is turning from the pandemic over to climate change! With a voice louder than any we have historically heard! I mean, just look at Sky News with their climate report every evening. However, in the UK, climate change is not perceived with as much dread as elsewhere in the world. A 1-metre rise in sea level won’t affect the vast majority of our homes, and the once-a-year beach holidays could do with a 2-degree temperature increase! Obviously, we’re joking, so what is the reality of UK climate change?

The Recent IPCC Report Makes for a Scary Read.

Much of the developing world will seek to be inhabitable. From holiday hotspots like the Maldives to impoverished communities in Africa. However, to think that this will not have consequences for our day-to-day life rather than just holidays would be naive.

By the end of the century, even with modest controls on climate change, we could see a rise in sea levels of 1 metre. Aside from obliterating much of Holland, this would have far-reaching ramifications for coastal and river regions; from the Thames estuary to Southern coastal regions having to rehome vast swathes of the population.

Not to Mention the Vastly Increased Disruption from Flooding.

Higher water levels and more violent weather patterns have already led to flooding we’ve never seen before. This combination will see the world, and the UK, become a very scary place for much of the year!

Also, consider that much of the land we may lose to the sea is a prime farming country. With other sites being heavily industrialised and full of contaminants, increased incidents of umbrellas will be the least of our worries!

So, What Can we do?

Should we just go out with a bang and have a non-stop party on hillsides? Or should we all take to building arks in our spare time? Well, we have a list of simple tips you can follow to become part of the solution rather than the problem. Of course, it’s not just about electric cars, although that’s a really good place to start!
