Electric Encounters: Matt’s Story | Kia E-Niro 2

Welcome to the first in our series of Electric Encounters. Operations Executive, Matt, recently hopped behind the wheel of his first electric car; a brand new Kia E-Niro 2! Join us in this first edition, as we pick Matt’s brain about his new life as an EV connoisseur!

What Did You Drive Before?

Before I hopped into my new car, I was driving a purple 55-plate, 1.25L, Ford Fiesta named Perry. Yes, after Perry the Platypus. Perry was in my life for a good 5 years and it served me well. I loved it even with its “massage function”, which activated at speeds over 60mph; the steering wheel would vibrate uncontrollably, so I just avoided going over 60mph!

Having said that, I have to admit I’m very glad to be free from Perry! What a car Geralt is (that’s what I’ve called my E-Niro; if you know you know!).

How Does the Range Hold Up?

Initially, I was hesitant about moving to electric because of the horror stories about the range. However, after just a couple of weeks in the Kia E-Niro 2, I can see how wrong I was! I haven’t had a problem with it yet, AND it actually does the mileage it says!

Having 400 miles in a petrol car is great, but when do you ever need that many miles in one go? The Kia E-Niro 2 has around 300 miles range, and my commute is 30 miles each way, so it works out perfectly. When it runs low, I can simply plug in at one of our 2 charge points at the office!

What About the Running Costs?

I lived with my parents when I had my old car, so the commute was a little shorter. However, I’d still be getting through a tank a week, costing me £40-£50 back then – the good old days! That’d probably cost you closer to £100 a week now with the Cost of Living Crisis and rising fuel costs.

Running Geralt is way lighter on the wallet as I generally charge at the office, which is free! When I’m out and about though, it’s only ever a couple of pounds to recharge enough to get me home! It might be a 30-minute wait but I’ll never say no to a Greggs at a service!

The costs of running your own vehicle really stack up compared to a Salary Sacrifice car, especially an electric one. Just comparing the road tax and benefit in kind tax of electric to petrol/diesel, there’s no question! 2% BIK on electric cars compared to 37% for the most polluting vehicles, and no road tax for EVs at all! You make savings on Tax and NI, charging is cheaper than fuel, and your insurance, maintenance, servicing, and tyres are all covered in your monthly payment! What’s not to love?

Would You Go Back To Traditional Motoring?

I can’t even consider the possibility of reverting back to a traditional petrol or diesel car, electric for life!
