Meet the BYD Family: BYD ATTO 3 and Co.

Who is BYD? Well, BYD is a Chinese multinational manufacturer, with subsidiary BYD Auto bringing us new and affordable electric vehicles. You might be wondering, “What does BYD stand for?” apparently it stands for Build Your Dreams – aww, how sweet is that?

Founded in February 1995, BYD is a high-tech company devoted to leveraging technological innovations for a better life.

BYD offers comprehensive new energy solutions with zero emissions! Now that does sound exciting and futuristic! Also, just last year BYD stopped production of all gasoline-powered vehicles and turned their focus to sustainable motoring. In June 2022, they also reported that they had sold nearly 650,000 EVs in the first half of the year, overtaking Tesla as the largest manufacturer in the world!

Charging

Like most electric cars nowadays, the BYD family can recharge 30% to 80% in just 30 minutes. BYD also partnered with Shell Recharge, bringing BYD drivers platinum membership offers which drastically reduce the cost of public charging.

There are loads of shell recharge hubs opening across the UK, take a look at our UK Charge Map Guide at the end of the blog to find out where they are! We update this guide when we find out about new hubs, so be sure to check back regularly

After hearing all that, we definitely have some high hopes for the BYD family, so let’s just get into it!

BYD ATTO 3

The BYD ATTO 3 is an electric SUV available in the UK since March this year. It has a price tag of £36,000 and 200 miles electric range. It also has a top speed of 99mph and an acceleration (0-62mph) of 7.3 seconds. So all-in-all, it’s not exactly rivalling the Porsche Taycan, but it’s definitely a great addition to the mid-range electric cars on the market, and it seems just perfect for the daily commute. This car comes in 5 colours: Surfing Blue, Skiing White, Climbing Grey, Parkour Red, and Exploring Green.

BYD ATTO 3 is equipped with the all-new BYD e-Platform 3.0 designed exclusively for pure electric vehicles. Giving full play to the advantages of intelligence, efficiency, safety and aesthetics, e-Platform 3.0 aims to promote NEVs’ performance in safety and low-temperature driving range as well as improve intelligent driving experiences, to build more efficient and safer new intelligent EVs.

BYD has been manufacturing batteries for nearly 30 years, their “latest game-changing Blade Battery has passed a series of extreme tests in rigorous conditions making it one of the world’s safest batteries”. We’re expecting to see a lot of safety and comfort from the BYD family, let’s take a look at the others.

BYD HAN

Up next is the BYD HAN, an electric sedan with a supposed range of 323 miles. It’s not yet available in the UK but sales start from around 70,000 in Europe. It seems to be the more luxurious model, possibly rivalling the Tesla, with a 0-62mph of just under 4 seconds – still slightly beaten out, but it’s impressive nonetheless.

The BYD HAN also comes in 6 colours: Space Black, Time Grey, Snow White, AI Blue, Emperor Red, and Mountain Green. Similar to the ATTO 3, but a little flashier.

BYD TANG

The BYD TANG is next, and it’s a 7-seater performance SUV with an impressive 0-62mph of 4.6 seconds and a range of 250 miles. It has generous storage, roof racks, and towing, which makes for an excellent EV for travelling; with 655L storage behind the front row seats, 940L behind the second row, and 235L behind the back row. The BYD TANG comes in 5 colours: Silver Sand Black, Mountain Grey, Snow White, Stony Blue, and Emperor Red.

It’s not available in the UK but has been available in parts of Europe since early 2022, so it’s a question of whether we will even see the BYD TANG. It also has a price tag of around 70,000.

BYD DOLPHIN

The BYD DOLPHIN adopts the “Ocean aesthetics” design concept, whatever that means, looks a bit like a VW ID.3 to me… Anyway, the DOLPHIN has a range of 265 miles and a 0-62mph in 7 seconds. It’s confirmed to be coming to the UK, hopefully sometime over the next few months. The DOLPHIN is speculated to have a price tag of under £30,000, which means another everyday- runner on the BYD roster and EV lineup; that’s just what we like to see.

It also has a respectable boot space of 345 litres, expanding to 1,310 litres when the seats are folded flat. It also has a sleek leather interior and a panoramic sunroof.

BYD SEAL

Winning the iF Design Award, you already know this one’s a looker! The BYD SEAL is expected to arrive in the UK a little after the DOLPHIN, but so far there’s no news on price or spec.

However, the SEAL has had a big upgrade on the other models, featuring the iTAC (or intelligence Torque Adaption Control system). It’s essentially a system designed for reducing or eliminating skidding by “intelligently allocating drive torque, utilizing torque shift, appropriate torque reduction, and negative torque output”. You’re basically guaranteed a safer and smoother drive in this EV!

BYD Seagull

There is also a BYD Seagull, which is just a great name, isn’t it? Sadly, it’s only confirmed to release in China so far, but it’s a nice little e-Up-sized runaround, so maybe we’ll see it on our roads in the future. Find out more about the Seagull here.
