Tesla Tech Used at New UK Electric Vehicle Hub

If ever a further sign was needed that electric vehicles (EVs) are here to stay in a big way, Tesla has announced a new UK Tesla EV hub to be based in Oxford that will see rapid public charge points making use of Tesla’s Supercharger technology in partnership with other providers.

Having been described as “Europe’s most powerful EV charging hub” in statements from the pioneering EV, solar and clean energy firm, the ‘Energy Superhub Oxford’ (ESO) will see the addition of 38 charging stations, including 26 ultra-rapid chargers from Tesla’s partnership with Dutch company Fastned.

Where and When Does the New Site Open?

In late 2021, the site will open to the public. The advanced charging up is being built in cooperation with EDF Renewables and Oxford City Council. Set to be the first of around 40 planned stations of its kind across Europe, the hub will deliver up to 300 miles (483km) of range in as little as 20 minutes, with up to 10 EVs able to charge simultaneously. Because the ESO will be located at a park-and-ride site south of the city near the ring road, this means you could effectively grab a quick coffee or a bite to eat, with your car ready to go the distance once you’re finished.

What is Tesla’s Supercharger Technology?

With authorities across the globe recognising the need to scale up EV infrastructure in anticipation of the shift away from petrol and diesel cars from 2030, Tesla is looking to play a pivotal role in delivering a workable network of charging points at high-traffic locations.

Currently found at over 2,500 sites across the globe, Tesla’s Supercharger technology offers a 480-volt direct current fast-charging technology. Initially produced for their own all-electric car range, teaming up with the likes of Fastned has seen the company expand its technology to the wider EV market.

Does this Dispel Fears About “Range Anxiety”?

It’s certainly encouraging. With more advanced charging points comes increasing confidence that the UK will see more than enough high-powered charging points to get them where they need to be by the time the transition to mass EVs is complete within the next decade.

With the latest data from Britain’s Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders indicating that EVs and plug-in hybrid models’ market share has grown to almost 14%, the future looks bright for the industry as a whole.
