Toyota BZ4x: Does Toyota’s Latest EV Entry Hold Up?

Anyone who has ever met me knows my view on Toyota. The creator of the “self-charging” hybrid has a lot to answer for. I can take my son throwing a tennis ball at my head and I can take my wife confusing her left and right. However, the very sound of “self-charging” makes me positively rage!! If there has ever been a more blatant case of false advertising, I have not seen it. I genuinely can’t believe how they got away with it! Every Toyota marketing exec is getting on the naughty list with coal as a present! It’s probably cleaner than their cars! So, is Toyota changing for the better? Let’s take a look at the Toyota BZ4x.

The Toyota BZ is About to Change All That!

This is a pure electric car from Toyota on the popular SUV shape that dominates UK roads. We won’t see one until 2023, but on arrival, it promises a realistic 200 miles range and lots of space. So, what’s great about that? Well, it’s built to a similar quality to Lexus, so we can guess the build quality and tech are great. Pricewise, it will start from £42,000, which dramatically undercuts Tesla’s Model Y – it doesn’t even match the finish of Toyota let alone Lexus! Like Tesla, it has a large screen, but the BZ4x also retains buttons. So, it’s kind of a halfway house, which purists will either welcome or hate.

For The More Challenging Driver

While we wait for Rivian to come to the UK, there’s a wealth of gadgets to cope with any terrain. From adjusting 4×4 power by the wheel to cameras all around on some models! (Subject to final UK spec).

Looks-wise, I’m not sold. Looks are subjective though. But to me, this looks a little dated. However, I also think the Polestar looks dated, which I know others love. Maybe I’m just picky. Build-wise, this is the first car on Toyota’s new BZ system, which promises efficiency, great charging, and comfort as it’s designed from the ground up. As we can’t drive one yet, we can’t truly review this.

The one thing I can say though is this should get Toyota back onto Santa’s nice list. Not until 2022, of course, when the car is expected later in the year. I hope it does well, they have a LOT to make up for!

What do you think about the Toyota BZ4x? We’d love to know your thoughts!
