Longest Range Electric Cars: Road Trip Edition!

It’s a well-known fact at this point that electric cars have no range and are a pain to charge. Wait, no, that’s just the skewed opinion of the media still stuck in the past! Electric cars, while they may not have the 400-mile range we’re used to, can still get you pretty far for comfort! Generally, we should take a pit stop around 2-3 hours into a journey. We thought we would look at some cars that can go for 3 hours easy! You might have a certain Greggs or Starbucks catch your eye before then anyway!

Models

When it comes to the range, you can look at a range of models; for instance, premium models like Porsche, mid-range brands like Tesla, or more mainstream brands like Kia. However, you have to remember that manufacturers promise a lot of range but rarely deliver. The range varies with the honesty, or realism, of the manufacturers. It was the same with petrol and diesel, with Kia, for example, being fairly accurate, while some were a bit dramatic, even criminally so. The same brands that were honest in petrol are even more truthful in electric range. Whereas the others, well, you know what they say about Leopards!

If you are going on a road trip with the family, Kia offers some great products! The Soul, Niro, and EV6 will eat up the miles, delivering around 260 miles range. It’s important to note that electric cars “rapid” charge to 80%, then slow down. So, 260 miles range means you can charge at a typical motorway service up to 200 miles in about 45 minutes.

For those who cannot stand the thought of a 45 minute stop

Your only real option is a Tesla. They have a range of models from the 3 to the S, covering close to 300 miles. Tesla has an ace up its sleeve, though; they have their very own charging network! Many electric cars charge as fast as a Tesla does. However, there are hardly any UK charge points that deliver that much power. The Tesla superfast charging network is the delicious icing on the cake for them. Just pull into a Tesla supercharger and plugin. Then you’re free to grab a Starbucks to go and have a little comfort break. Before you’ve even finished your drink, you will have 200 miles plus ready to go! Unless, of course, you’re not in a Tesla, as currently, only Tesla vehicles can use them.

I have a Jaguar i-PACE.

Jaguar claims that the i-PACE covers 293 miles, but I get around 220. Let’s be honest though, covering 30,000 miles a year is still worth it. Not only is it much cheaper than petrol or diesel cars, but much more practical too! I wake up, my car is full of charge and raring to go! On average, I have to charge publicly once every 10-days. However, after 3 hours of driving, it is very much welcomed! Usually, I charge during meetings, so it doesn’t tend to impact my day. Well, other than a couple of minutes’ walk!

If you have a bladder of steel, you have a few options that will take you around 300 miles under normal conditions; Tesla Model 3 Long Range, Tesla Model S, Mustang Mach E Long Range, or premium Porsche Taycan. However, if you only cover upwards of 200-miles sometimes, there are alternatives; you can use the money you save to fund a hire car, or our Salary Sacrifice customers look at our Electric Flex option!

Range anxiety?

For those of us with a drive or garage, range anxiety should not be a reason to shy away from the Electric Revolution! Avoid the stress of the weekly petrol station queues and fuelling and swap the misery for a luxury charging experience, chilling with a festive hot chocolate in the warm! Why not chuck on some Dragon’s Den clips while you wait?

If you don’t have a drive or garage, it is trickier. However, we have some tips to help you make it work! You can check them out here!
